Slime Mould Kit – Explore the Growth of Physarum Polycephalum

Our Slime Mould Kit provides everything you need to grow and observe Yor Chosen slime mould — a single-celled organism famous for its ability to navigate mazes, locate food, and form complex networks without a nervous system.

Each kit includes a sterile culture, growth medium, and instructions for easy setup and observation. The slime mould feeds on simple carbohydrates such as oats and can be used for educational demonstrations, biological studies, or as an enrichment culture to support bioactive systems.

In addition to its educational and research value, is also recognised as the primary food source for many high-end springtail species, though it can be fed safely to most other springtails as well.

Key Points:

Contains all components needed to start a slime mould culture

Serves as a primary food source for many springtails

Suitable for education, research, or microfauna culture enrichment

Usage Instructions:
Rehydrate the provided agar base and place a small piece of the dried slime mould onto the surface. Feed with oats or another mild carbohydrate source and keep in a dark, humid environment. The organism will begin to grow and spread within 24–48 hours.

Agar Preparation Instructions (Single Petri Dish)

Measure the Mix
Weigh out 2 grams of agar powder for a single standard 90 mm Petri dish.

Add Water
Combine with 100 ml of clean, dechlorinated water in a heat-resistant container. Distilled or boiled and cooled water is recommended for best results.

Dissolve the Agar
Gently heat the mixture while stirring continuously until the agar powder is fully dissolved and the solution becomes clear. Avoid boiling vigorously to prevent water loss.

Pour the Agar
While still hot and liquid, carefully pour enough agar into the Petri dish to create a thin, even layer (approximately 3–4 mm deep).

Set and Cool
Allow the agar to cool and solidify completely at room temperature with the lid slightly ajar to prevent condensation. Once set, replace the lid securely.

Storage
Prepared plates can be stored sealed in a cool, dark place for up to one week before use. Avoid direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations.
